The Space Elevator has moved from the subject of science fiction novel (Arthur C. Clarke) to the realm of a scientific possibility. NASA has granted funds to the Institute of Scientific Research (ISR) to investigate the feasibility of designing and building a space elevator.
The Space Elevator is a 62,000 mile long ribbon, composed of super-strong carbon nanotubes, stretching from a point on the Earth' equator into space. It will have the capability of ferrying satellites, spaceships and space station components into space using electric lifts clamped to the ribbon.
Costs of lifting payloads would be reduced to a projected $100 per pound as compared to current costs using launched rockets of $10,000 to $40,000 per pound.
You will need Windows MediaPlayer installed on your computer to see the ISR Video. Turn up the sound!
