Bathroom - Energy Saving Tips

1) Toilet

- Place a plastic soda bottle or milk jug filled with water, pebbles or sand into your toilet tank and save 45 liters of water a day.

- Fix toilet leaks. Add a few drops of food colouring to the toilet tank. Wait 15 minutes. If the dye appears inside the bowl, then you have a leak. Replace the toilet tank flapper.

2) Water Heater

- Purchase a Water Heater Insulating Blanket for your electric or gas water heater. The extra layer of insulation can significently reduce the amount of “standby” heat loss from hot water tanks, saving you money on your utility bills.

- Install a Water Heater Timer which enables you to set specific on and off times for water heater operation. For example, you may wish to time the water heater operation in the early morning (before morning showers), mid day (before laundry) and late afternoon (before dishwasher use). Set the trippers to turn on 1 hour ahead of periods of major hot water usage.

- Check the thermostat setting on your water heater and reduce to 120 degrees or less. This temperature is adequate for most households.

3) Shower

- Take showers instead of baths. A shower saves 4 – 5 gallons of water.

- Install a flow restrictor on your showerhead. These are easily installed, inexpensive, and reduces your water use to less than 2.5 gallons per minute. Conventional showerheads can flow at up to 5 gallons per minute. With the restrictor, a 10 minute shower will use 25 gallons of water – saving 5 gallons over a bath. This water savings could add up to $145 a year in energy savings over a bath or regular showerhead.

4) Faucets

- Repair any faucet leaks. Hot water leaking at a rate of 1 drip per second wastes 1,661 gallons of water a year. This translates to approximately $35 / year in energy costs.

- Turn off the tap when you shave or brush your teeth and save 7-12 liters of water per minute.

5) Lighting

- Vanity lighting is one of the highest use fixtures in the average home. Replace the vanity lights with low energy CFL bulbs which provide bright warm light, use much less energy and generate less heat than regular incandescent bulbs.

6) Sealing

- Cover and seal all holes leading from bathroom plumbing, ductwork or electrical runs.
